Grenoble Weather

Grenoble is in the south of France on the 45th parallel, and only 200 meters above sea level. The weather at the end of May is usually warm and sunny, but bring a pullover. We have 2000 hours of sun per year, as much as Toulouse or Bordeaux, and an annual rainfall of 760mm (30 inches) distributed rather evenly over the year. You can check the 10 day forecast for Grenoble, but mountain weather can change suddenly, and the forecast is probably only reliable for 3-4 days :-)

Cash Machines and Banks

VISA cards are most useful in France, and may be the best way of changing currency. You can withdraw cash from any of the many cash machines (there is one 200 meters outside the ILL-ESRF front gate) or pay in almost any shop. MasterCard/EuroCard is also well known, but American Express may only be accepted in large restaurants, banks etc, with perhaps a surcharge.

Telephones

French public telephones require a telephone card that you can buy at any "Tabac" or post office. Some (eg at the rail station) will work with an ordinary credit card. There is a pay-phone inside the ILL entrance. Telephones can also be used from the guesthouse rooms (ask at the front desk). And over 90% of the population is covered by one of 3 cellular networks. Your foreign GSM phone should work if it conforms with the European standard and if your operator permits it.

Internet

A number of public computers will be available, both at ILL and at the guesthouse. You can use your own computer from your guesthouse room using "dynamic IP" provided you bring a normal RJ45 cable and ethernet card.

Public Transport

Public transport is excellent in France, with fast trains, fast autoroutes and numerous tram and bus services in Grenoble (buses stop at the ILL-ESRF front gate every 10 minutes during working hours and take only ~10 minutes to town). However they are infrequent at night ! You can buy a reduced rate "carnet" of 10 tickets at any "Tabac" or individual tickets from the conference organisers.
