Excursions

We will organise a choice of excursions on the Saturday, and it should also be possible to ski on the Sunday by private arrangement.

Beaujolais Vineyards and Chateaux

The cost will be 72 Euro including lunch with samples of local wine. We will leave from the front gate of ILL-ESRF at 8:30 sharp Saturday to call in at the nearby Chartreuse Caves, the world's largest liqueur cellars where the famous green and yellow nectars have been distilled since 1605 by hooded Monks to a secret recipe. We then continue to the heart of the Beaujolais winegrowing area for lunch in the hotel-restaurant Les Maritonnes before visting in the afternoon the Hameau du Vin a 19th century railway station converted into a wine museum with ancient presses and other equipment. There are extensive animations of grape growing and wine-making, as well as wine-tasting, purchase of wine etc. The top beaujolais wines (crus) are Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Régnié, and the romantically named Saint-Amour. On the way home we will discover the region called Pierres Dorees where the houses made from blonde stone shine in the sun (hopefully), and stop at the medieval village of OINGT. Variations can be decided as we go, depending on the humour of the participants. The wine tour is being organised by Alan Hewat.

Chartreuse Mountains and Monastry

A free walking tour of the Chartreuse mountains near Grenoble will be organised, with a visit to the Chartreuse Monastry, whose monks still make the famous green and yellow liquors (but not in the monastry :-) The walk is not technically difficult, but sturdy walking boots and shorts or jeans are advisable. A picnic lunch will be available, with cars leaving the ILL-ESRF front gate at 8:30 Saturday. The walk is being organised by Sax Mason and Ann Dale.
