Travel to Grenoble

An excellent site for locating ILL-ESRF on a map, showing an aerial photo of the site, and obtaining road directions is http://www.mappy.com/ Just enter "rue Jules Horowitz" and "Grenoble", "France" as the location, zoom to the "District" scale and click on "Photo" for the photo.

Arriving by car:

On the autoroute from Paris-Lyon, on entering Grenoble, take the fork to "Bastille-Gare" then the exit "Polygone Scientifique". On the autoroute from Geneva-Grenoble, before entering Grenoble, take the "Rocade Sud" towards Lyon-Sisteron. At the end (~8km) there are three choices: take the right exit towards "Lyon" then exit after passing the ESRF synchrotron (~5km) towards the "Polygone Scientifique".

Arriving by rail:

From the Grenoble railway station, take the grey and blue TAG bus No.34 direction "Centre Nucleaire" every 8 to 11 minutes from 05h30 to 20h47 weekdays (timetable). The ESRF/ILL/EMBL site is the last stop. The journey takes about 10 minutes, but there are fewer buses Saturdays and very few Sundays).

Arriving by air:

Within Europe, there are "low cost" airlines.
Even with connections via London, the cost is usually much less than with the national airlines.

  • EasyJet to Grenoble, Lyon, Geneva or Paris. For example, every day for £34 return London Luton to Grenoble !
                     dep. 11:10; arr. 13:50 then Grenoble to London Luton dep. 14:20; arr. 15:00 BUT BOOK EARLY
  • RyanAir to St.Etienne then the train via Lyon to Grenoble (~2.5 hours) or Glasgow to Paris then the TGV to Grenoble (3-4 hours).
  • KELKOO or OPODO can be used to find cheap tickets (eg London to Lyon on British Airways for £88 return 24-28 May).

    You can fly to one of the following airports:

  • Grenoble Airport only from London Luton on EasyJet. A bus for only € 3.80 to Grenoble rail/bus station meets every flight and takes ~45 minutes. By far the cheapest and most convenient if you can get to London Luton airport (see below).
  • Lyon - Saint Exupery Airport (formerly Satolas), then take the frequent shuttle bus to Grenoble (65 minutes and € 30 return), every hour from 05H30 at the airport and from 05H00 from Grenoble. You can ask the driver to stop at the "Polygon Scientifique", otherwise from the terminus take Bus 34 opposite the railway station to ILL/ESRF (centre nucléaire).
  • Paris Roissy-Ch-de-G. Some TGV trains leave directly from "Airport CDG 2 TGV", with a change at Lyon for Grenoble. Otherwise take the RER train to Gare de Lyon (45 min with a change at Chatelet les Halles), then the TGV to Grenoble (3 hours and as little as € 50 return if you book a PREMS ticket at least 3 weeks in advance)
  • Geneva Airport, then the train from Geneva airport to Grenoble (~2.5 hours). Check with the latest Swiss and French train timetables - There are not many trains! There is also an AeroExpress bus if you book 48 hours in advance, but the connection times are probably no better than the train times.

    To get to your departure airport in the UK:

    Use the travel planner on transportdirect.info. For example click on the "Quick Planner - Train" and enter eg "Loughborough" as the departure and "Luton airport" as the destination (for EasyJet flights to Grenoble). You will find there are direct Midland Main Line trains that take only 75 minutes to Luton Airport Parkway station, from where there is a free 5 minute bus connection to Luton airport. Try to get a "Saver Return" rail ticket, which need not be booked in advance, has few restrictions, and is about half the price of a fully flexible fare.
